There is a surprise in that round belly. N & S are expecting their first child and they have decided to wait until the little one is born to see if they will have a little baby boy or a darling little girl. I first met the family at their home in Portland. We spent some time taking photos near their gorgeous front window and took a few photos with S’s mom. As we walked to the nearby Peninsula Park I asked her about Indian pregnancy traditions. It was interesting to learn about their culture. One of the most old-fashioned Indian traditions is the belief that after giving birth, a daughter belongs home with her mother. Indian women may be married for years, but their home is still the place where they grew up. After childbirth, the belief is, no one can take care of you, nurture you back to health and understand what you’re going through like your mother. The modern-day twist, which this family has embraced, is to have your mother stay with you at your home. I think the tradition is beautiful, no one can take care of you like mom.
I enjoyed walking through Peninsula Park with mom and dad to be. The light was gorgeous… even if it was 100 degrees out. Mom did very well in the heat (I did stick her in a fountain for a few photos to help her cool off). N and S it was a pleasure to meet you and I can’t wait to meet your new baby. I look forward to our newborn session. I hope you enjoy your maternity photos.
